Murder at Massereene by RIRA 07 March 2009
Sappers Mark Quinsey, 23, from Birmingham and Patrick Azimka, 21, from Wood Green, London, were murdered at Massereene Army base in Antrim. They were members of 38 Engineer Regiment which deployed to Afghanistan the next day.The soldiers had ordered pizza and had gone to the barracks gates to collect it. Gunmen waiting outside openeded fire killing the two soldiers and wounding four other people, including two pizza delivery men and two soldiers. A Dublin-based newspaper received a call supposedly from the Real IRA which claimed responsibility for the attack. The soldiers were the first to be murdered in Northern Ireland since Lance Bombardier Stephen Restorick was killed by an IRA sniper in 1997.
