William was a member of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) when killed. The brief circumstances of the death are as follows: One of four RUC killed by 1000lb IRA bomb in a trailer at Killeen border crossing outside Newry. They were there to take over the escort of a security truck from the Gardai. He was married with 2 and 3 year old sons. Killed with Tracy Doak, David Baird and Steven George Rogers.
