Alan was a member of the British Army (BA) when killed. The brief circumstances of the death are as follows: Shot by sniperwhile on British Army foot patrol, Dungiven, County Londonderry.

| Alan was an old school friend with us both joining the Army at the same time , with me joinining the Royal Sigs and Alan joining the Royal Hampshires. He was always a good friend and in the thick of most mischief and sad loss to all. R.I.P Alan my old son. |
